Is the Entertainment District in need of a big chain grocery store?

A Whole Foods seems like it would be suitable for the area...

Anyone know of any plans?

There is a Loblaws at Queen and Portland, which is pretty close to the Entertainment District.

Seems downtown's biggest drawback always the lack of big chain grocery stores...Loblaw's Maple Leaf Gardens has now filled a great void on the East side...West side needs a little help tons of condos over there!!

You would want it to be within walking distance of Entertainment District as many inhabitants have no cars...the glory of downtown living!! Walking to everything..almost...no Grocery.

Especially in a few years when more buildings are completed - it will definitely be needed in this hood.

i think that Loblaws, sobey's and friends are very much aware of this situation but they just can't find the right location to fit a big grocery store in the area.
The new Loblaws at maple leaf gardens and the one on Queen & Portland should be good for now.
BTW, I think what they did with MLG is just amazing!

Thanks to Brian Persaud who says, via Twitter:
"In Feb Steve Ladurantaye reported that the LCBO blew apart projected sales with $12.5 M in annual sales. Groceries would do well"

There's a Rabba coming very soon to Simcoe and Nelson. It will be very busy in there for sure. I know it's not a big chain store but best we can do for now. I emailed Adam Vaughan about this a couple years ago and he pointed to the Longo's at the ACC and the plans for the Loblaws at Queen & Portland. I don't think these guys get that walking like 20-30mins each way in Toronto Winter Weather carrying groceries is not exactly pleasant. There's a parking lot on Richmond between Duncan and John that would be perfect for it -- if not already slated for ANOTHER condo!

Loblaws...Sobeys...Longos...Whoever can figure it out soonest is going to profit BIG time. It's a question I get asked every time I do a showing in the area: where's the closest grocery store? My answer: well...hmmm...there's a little store here...and a mini-market there...actually there is NO real grocery store anywhere in this entire neighbourhood filled with massive 40-storey condos. Opportunity much??
Everyone I know who lives in the area and west of the area are more excited about the Loblaws at Q&P than they would be if the Leafs won the cup. The euphoria that having a proper grocery store within walking distance has caused is testament to the importance of having one in your neighbourhood with respect to investment returns.

Whole Foods is rumoured to be the future ground floor tenant at Minto's proposed condo development at Front & Bathurst.

A Trader Joe's would be an awesome fit to the ED.
