BUILDING
The Cortland’s handsome design is rooted in the vernacular of the New York cityscape. It is a single building with distinctive façades, each subtly different in character yet working together beautifully.
LaSalle limestone stonework, molded brickwork, and metal rivet detailing reflect the industrial charm of the neighborhood, whereas the generous bay windows offer long city and river views. The lightness of the architecture belies a solidity that comes from more than a million hand-laid bricks in a distinctive five-color blend. This is an important new building for West Chelsea, with a strong presence on the skyline and streetscape.
DESIGN
Every brick in The Cortland has been made using an artisan kiln-fired production method that applies varying degrees of sand onto five of the brick’s six faces: hence the term five-color brick blend. The bricks’ irregular edges give them a distinctly historic feel, with many custom-shaped pieces at key corners, recesses and pilasters.
RESIDENCES
The Cortland’s residences are a celebration of light and space, with generously proportioned rooms and open-plan living that lends itself to a number of different uses over the course of the day. Extended ceiling heights and large floor plates are the perfect backdrop for art collections, statement furniture pieces, and family heirlooms.
LIVING AND DINING
The Cortland’s expansive, open-plan living and dining areas feature warm wood flooring in addition to floor-to-ceiling windows that invite residents to enjoy stunning views of the Hudson River and the inspiring city skyline. Marble fireplaces designed by Olson Kundig and outdoor terraces are present in select units.
KITCHENS
Accent cabinets are finished in hand-brushed artisanal Italian metallic lacquer, a reflection of the high-quality craftsmanship throughout the building. The Statuario Belgia marble is imported from Carrara, Italy, making the materiality of these kitchens truly spectacular. A custom Olson Kundig Jack Box for storage area has been integrated into the corner of the island, creating convenient additional space to store favorite entertaining items.
PRIMARY BEDROOMS
In select primary bedrooms, exquisite marble fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling windows create the perfect ambiance for starting and finishing the day.
BATHROOMS
Primary bathrooms are lined with specialized marbles from the Henraux Quarry, one of the oldest quarries in Italy. Primary bathrooms feature large freestanding tubs, rain head showers and radiant floor heating. Illuminated medicine cabinets provide additional storage. Secondary bathrooms are dressed in smooth, large format Ash Gray stone, beautifully complemented by wood casework with integrated finger pulls for drawer access.
