Why buy when you can rent? Wait, what?

According to some new data by Zillow, in many larger cities in the US, many qualified potential home-buyers (by qualified they mean: a credit score over 700 and the actual income to afford the rent in said city) are choosing to rent instead.

While Zillow points to "lifestyle" choices: putting off settling down, marriage, family life...  why do you think some people choose to rent instead of buying?

There are advantages to both.

How do you spend your $?
Buying? Or renting?

I rent because I don't know where I want to be for multiple years, even if I do know what city. I might want to change neighborhoods, or just get a larger space. I'm not ready to make those choices yet, and renting is a great option in the interim.

Agreed, and that was a major reason for many qualified buyers choosing to rent —especially in tech heavy cities.

As someone who has lived in all five boroughs, I like the flexibility of being able to up and go to greener pastures and shorter commutes...
