What does Fundrise starting an REIT mean for crowdfunding?

Fundrise announced that it's starting up an REIT, which is a more traditional real estate investment method whereby fund managers oversee a portfolio, charge their investors a management fee, and provide a return-- all without the investors having a say in what goes into the portfolio.

But, Fundrise's traditional approach is to empower their investors to make their own direct investments, thereby circumventing the management fee inherent in traditional real estate investment.

Does their new product offering mean that they're losing steam on the direct investment side? Or, is it just another offering meant to fill out their product line?
