Inspired by New York’s first apartment buildings, with one residence per floor, the design evokes spacious loft-style interiors that flow with light and air. Astonishing great rooms extend across the entire 67-feet of building frontage. The design expresses the building’s industrial heritage, redefined through contemporary sensibility and materials, with extravagantly large rooms, divided by a series of sliding, full-height glass doors.
The kitchens at 12 East 13th Street, at the center of each home, are the focus of everyday life. A stylish place to entertain: cook’s kitchens created with an exceptionally high level of design, custom Italian cabinetry with the finest appliances and finishes all seamlessly integrated. State-of-the-art appliances include a Miele wall speed oven and refrigerator, a 48-inch ILVE range with eight-burner gas cooktop and dual electric ovens and a full height Gaggenau wine cooler with space for 70 bottles. Two Miele dishwashers and an ice machine are in the island.
The clean lines of mid-century Modernism have inspired a master bath designed for style and comfort. The soothing interior is lined with a floor of Zebra gray honed Italian limestone and walls of oversized Bianco Dolomiti marble slabs. The vanity features rift-cut white oak cabinetry, and a countertop of polished Calacatta Borghini marble. A freestanding 6-foot soaking tub proudly stands as a sculptural presence in the spacious master bath. For privacy, the shower and toilet are each enclosed by floor-to-ceiling tempered glass partitions.
The continuity and consistency of materials is carried through the secondary bathrooms. There are different patterns for the Azul Bateig marble tile floor in each bathroom. White ceramic wall tiles are stacked floor-to-ceiling, and there is a custom white lacquer vanity designed with water resistant galvanized drawer fronts, a nod to 19th century design.
Atop 12 East 13th Street is a gently canted three-story curtain wall that provides the setting for one of the most spectacular residences in the City. Conceived as a glass-enclosed volume, the 5,700 square foot triplex penthouse is an atelier of light. A sculptural, soaring wood and glass open stair connects the three levels, crossing the space against the sky. The vast 3-story interior encompasses four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms, and includes a formal dining room, a family room, and a private sauna. Two gracious terraces for outdoor living, each on a different level, can be accessed by your private elevator.
