Thoughts on Frank Gehry and David Mirvish's plan to transform King West?

Official images will be released at a press conference this morning.

(Source:cbc.ca)

What we know (or, think we know):
- Site to be located on the Mirvish properties on King West
- Frank Gehry to be the architect
- Three storeys, at 85s each
- 2,600 condo suites
- 3 to 7 years to build
- 19 year old theatre to be demolished
- To include a 60,000 square foot gallery (free to the public)
- OCAD to have its own gallery

Does anyone else think the building on the far right resembles @Exhibit Residences?

It will be sad to see the theater go, but the trade-off is well worth it.

This will be a real win for Toronto: this will probably be the only time where these two visionaries will ever come together.

I'm not to impressed and have lots of questions.

Will they be building new theatres and where/when?

Even though I sell new construction condos some of these projects are getting ridiculous. We are getting rid of everything and replacing it with condos. Pretty soon we will have no where to go but to someone elses condo. We are starting to lose all the interesting things that draw people to Toronto

@Nicholas Gavey But, it will be replaced with two new art galleries, which will be a huge cultural draw.

WOAH!! If you're gonna dream, dream BIG! I can see this one clogging up the industry news for the next while. Can't wait to see what the city has to say on it.

I think it is an exciting development and a welcome addition to our skyline.
It is extremely ambitious for three 80+ story towers and over 2,500 units of housing, though I think after the final approvals are said and done it may be about 10-15 stories shorter. It should at least stand 10-15 stories higher than the neighbouring Festival Tower to the west and Theatre Park Condos to the east.
It really refreshing to see a building that's not the same old grey glass box.

Given that there is so much construction in the ED and property prices has increased a lot there and with some predicting that it may be the next Yorkville, I am worried that condos here will be prices very preciously especially with Festival Tower and Theatre Park commanding $800+/sq.ft. and the project being designed by a starchitect. There will be an oversaturation of high-priced condos along with tiny units which we are already starting to see.

My only gripe is that King Street between University and Spadina is extremely congested and the road is not that wide and I don't think it could handle all of these new developments over the next 10 years.

Those are some pretty amazing renderings. The building to the west looks like it is going to fall over and that offset section the in east building looks pretty awesome.

Very exciting for this neighbourhood.

The battle of Yorkville vs. King West just got exciting :)

Its high time an artistic hand got involved in the king west area. All i see is condos created by boys whose only inspiration is bars. The Mirvish touch is well wanted and needed and i hope to see an architectural makeover with an artistic pen.

By the looks of the Toronto Skyline above the poor CN tower will not be alone up there any more. Will Toronto suffer as a result? Or does the proposal add a nice backdrop for people who love instagramming skyline shots from the island?!

This was the best quote of the morning by Frank Gehry:

“I am not building condominiums. I am building three sculptures for people to live in."

I love that quote. I am tired of the shoebox literally 'i pads ' pun intended stacked into glass and steel monsters we pay to live in. Its not only about being lucky enough to live within a sculpture, its as well about taking a walk among beautiful sculptos 'sculpture condos' instead of looking up at ugly blocks of concrete threatening to molest the skies.

While the rest build condos you Mr Gehry kindly build your sculptos. Beauty is a noble excess, its always welcomed:)

Pretty exciting..but wondering if 80 storeys too high..a little carried away? Those buildings will definitley sway..in the wind...High Rise Living!!...Is it a win-win? Not sure ...I do a gree with: " We are getting rid of everything and replacing it with condos. Pretty soon we will have no where to go but to someone else's condo. We are starting to lose all the interesting things that draw people to Toronto" ~ Nicholas Gavey OR is this an interesting thing to bring people to Toronto?

Having a gehry designed

sculpto is a gift to Toronto. It would definitely enhance the area and draw an artistic crowd. It would be a landmark

Awesome impact on the arts & entertainment district. Visual media art vs performing art how this unfolds should also be interesting. World class.. thank you David Mirvish.

“I am not building condominiums. I am building three sculptures for people to live in."
That was actually said by David Mirvish during the presentation.

Each tower will be sold and built in phases, so expect thisto be a very long build.

If the middle tower ends up looking something like Gehry's 8 Spruce in New York, I would be very happy:
