House or Condo?

I live in a house and prefer it to a condo. I prefer the concept of owning a piece of land as opposed to a box in the sky. I also don't like having to share stuff (like a party room) and get permission to do things such as change the lock on my door.

However, I once checked out some full floor condo units in the Hazleton in Yorkville and decided that if i could afford one i'd buy one - they are pretty insane.

So, my question for you is: House or Condo?

^^Condo for me. I love the lifestyle. I love not having to do anything. I never mow the lawn. I never have to take out the garbage. I never have to have repair men quoting me on work. I park underground, and take an elevator right to my floor. In the winter, I don't have to go outside to my car, and I dont need to wipe it off. I am walking distance from the Air Canada Centre, the best restaurants in Toronto, the theatre and the theater. I have two full gyms within 20 seconds from my unit. I have two rooftop terraces to hang out on.
What could be better?

I used to a be a house guy, but now it's all about the condo lifestyle like Matt said.
I actually think in the reverse of Cliff. If I could afford a large (mansion-type) home, then I'd buy one.
I enjoy living in the heart of the city with a view of the city lights (or lake depending on your unit). The only downside is not being able to throw backyard bbqs, which are always winners in the summertime.

Condo for lifestyle; house for a long term investment.

House, for sure. It's more work in regards to maintenance, but I like the fact that the only rules you are bound by are municipal bylaws. If you want to paint, build a huge deck, renovate a basement, add an extension, you can (most of the time) do it. Plus, I feel like there is more of a "community" when you live in a house. I like the idea of talking to your neighbours on a sidewalk, having a backyard barbecue, or just lazying around on a front porch.
I also don't mind doing yard work like mowing the lawn, raking the leaves, or tending to a garden (and no - I won't come over to your house and mow your lawn, Cliff). If you maintain your property well, your home will have much more character then any condo unit.
One day I would like to own a modest, well kept property, but have an amazing cottage up north.

I've been in Property Management for going on 35 years in Ontario and Townhomes are a great first home for many families, and if older folk aren't up to elevators (when power goes out etc.) Townhomes are a great lifestyle. You get a small yard area, a drive usually and even a garage to keep the car spiffy.

Like others mentioned it comes down to personal preference. I've lived in both a house and a condo and they both have their pros and cons.

I'm on the fence. I lived in nothing but houses when I was growing up. I love the space, freedom and flexibility. But I also love living in a condo now as well. Major part being accessibility, location, not having a too LARGE a space. Condo to me means convenience.
However when I decide to start a family I would look quickly to owning a house again.

I prefer house because I love gardening, and sitting in my backyard in the summer and enjoying my gardens. I also like the idea of being able to walk out the door as apposed to waiting for elevators. As for shoveling snow in the winter (which I hate to do), well I get my boys to do that.

Just an update to my November 18 2011 comment:

I now live in a house, and love it. But, without a doubt miss a lot of aspects of condo living.

Main things I miss:
1. Garbage chute
2. Underground parking
3. Never having to deal with any property maintenance issues

Main things I love about my house:
1. Owning my own piece of land
2. Much greater sense of home-ownership, and connection to my house
3. Gardening
4. Sense of community.

I still miss condo living, but love my house!

I've been in a house now for almost 3 years after selling the condo due to an expanding family. Both have their pros and cons, but overall I miss condo living big time. I would much rather live the condo lifestyle than the home ownership lifestyle, however it's not a practical solution for where I'm at in life right now. Low maintenance simplified living is really ideal for urbanites -especially self-employed urbanites like me who work pretty much all the time and the last thing I want to do is cut the grass or deal with raccoon insurrections.

There are some obvious home ownership perks though. having your own space/land ownership is nice and it's great for kids. Best part is probably that I am fortunate enough to live in a detached house in the core of the city. Not sharing walls with anyone else - you can't put a price on that!!

@Cliff Peskin ...I miss condo living, and the associated lifestyle, but I am loving my house. That said, I have only been in my house for 2 months, so it would be very hard for me to say at this point which I prefer. Give me a year.

@Tara Azari Probably my favourite condo in the city; I am there multiple times a week.

In fact, my TEAM picture on BuzzBuzzHome is taken from the rooftop:http://www.buzzbuzzhome.com/team.aspx

Great choice! Excellent design, very homey feeling, with probably the best location in Toronto.
