Buy a house, or rent and invest your money?

I just came across this video about "The Millennial Revolution": https://youtu.be/fGaEqwGGXfQ

It is preaching that you should rent, and invest your money in the market, then retire at 30 and do what you love.

Thoughts on this movement?

I hear you. Also, I'm a big RE guy. Perhaps she should have said buy a small house or rent the basement or buy a condo, etc.

Idiotic. This reminds me of that stupid person from Toronto Life who lived at their parents house and bought overpriced wine and bragged about travelling to Boston.

Actually this is a very interesting topic that has been gaining moment for about 10 years now. It was mainly derived from books like the '4 Hour Work Week' but more from What Jacob did at and talks about on his website and on his book. http://earlyretirementextreme.com/

There are many famous advocates of the FIRE (Financially Independent & Retire Early) movement such as:

http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/ (considered a legend)

Daniel, no doubt, Mr. Money Mustache is a legend - but, he doesn't say DO NOT BUY A HOUSE.

In fact, in a bunch of posts he talks about home-purchasing, and sets out some good rules for beginners.

He also writes about his experience with "downsizing" into buying a 1,000 square foot home.

Perhaps she should have said, "Buy a house. The market is hot. The appreciation will be better than any stock market investment you will make, and borrowing against your house is cheap, giving huge leverage for the appreciating market."

Or, perhaps, no one should listen to this movement.

Has anyone ever run across Garth Turner's website http://www.greaterfool.ca? If so, thoughts?

Issack - you mean the floor crossing former MP who has predicted a real estate crash for a decade now?

I read his blog on occasion, if only for the tinfoil hat tone of it.

@Daniel, it sounds like they are trying to start a Garth Turner movement of people who didn't buy real-estate over the past 10 years (on the same absurd level), to get people to their website to sell them shit.

nothing wrong with either the real problem is finding the right investment. now what if you took your equity and got 12% return allowing you to pay off your remaining mortgage balance....... how does that sound
