Are stainless-steel appliances overrated?

There's an article in The Grid suggesting they are, though buyers almost always want them:

"Why? Do they make food taste better? Does the stove whip up a nice risotto while you watch TV? The refrigerators, for example, are magnets for fingerprints, scratches, and grease splatter from the stoveā€”all of which draw the eye against a chrome-like backdrop."

I personally love stainless steel appliances. Do they make food taste better? That's up to the chef...does a Porsche make someone a better driver?

Yes fingerprints are a pain to clean off, but that's what the handles are for. As for the grease splatter, well, grease splatter should be cleaned no matter what materials your appliances are made of IMO.

Design trends do come and go quite quickly but I don't think stainless steel appliances are going to go out of style anytime soon.

I think it's just starting to get past the peak saturation of them in my opinion. I think the classic enamel look from the 20s will come back - on high quality appliances in an off white or pastel colour. But besides that I think you'l just start seeing more diversity with appliances like this one sold by Williams Sonoma:

I much prefer the look of stainless steel in a typical house. Either that, or integrated with the cabinets.

When i see super luxury that are integrated, they actually loose some of their appeal to me. When i see a monster subzero, i like seeing its a fridge.

My favorite fridge was actually a glass front, but man would that be hard to keep clean. Not to mention how organized everything in the fridge needs to be!

My favorite ovens are the cast iron units with multiple doors. They are usually available in a variety of uniqe colours like blue and red etc...

I like stainless.  The commercial grade look is appealing to me.  White, black are ugly.

I prefer the cabinetry door matched fridge, but I agree with Jordan nothing like a large glass door subzero. Perhaps I should start a new division of Zebra, the weekly fridge organization & cleaning service! I think stainless will die off in a couple years. I have had many requests to add fridge panels to doors after the fact, which is easy if you buy the proper brand from the get go, keep that in mind when purchasing. Also note however you must opt to have side gables deeper than fridge to be a simpler/cleaner looking change. I have also extended gables to add cabinetry doors which hide fridge but it is in behind 2 doors then you open fridge doors as usual.

another note if shopping for a fridge that  you want to be an integrated style, look at brands that offer counter depth fridges before you purchase. You will save alot of time and effort for the cabinetry installer, unless its a total makeover then you should tell installer what brand/model up front and go buy it. You can save some money buying counter depth however because many gables are off the shelf ready and if installed are already counter depth.
