What does your email address say about you?

I see a lot of Realtors with non "own domain" email addresses, which makes me think they are not computer literate, and not savvy.

What do you think when you see email addresses??

I think agents put alot more thought into what their email looks like in front of clients (gmail, personal domain, etc), but I dont think the clients or public really care...

I personally think that in this day and age there are NO EXCUSES for not having a personalized domain and email address for business purposes.

Even if someone isn't "computer literate" enough to setup a domain name and email address there is an entire IT and support industry that can help them do so.

I immediately have a red flag go off when I see someone using a @gmail.com, @hotmail.com, or even their @trebnet.com for business purposes. It makes me wonder how serious and invested they are in building a successful business.

It probably would cost less than $75 to have someone set you up with a domain and personalized "own domain" email address..... might I suggest Google Apps for Business. Very simple to setup and just as powerful as your "Gmail" account.

Good list :) They forgot the new Outlook email. I haven't really played around with it but it looks like they've really been inspired by Gmail.

@TheRedPin the new Outlook mail is a great visual redesign and should be powerful once they focus more of their energy on it. Microsoft is a tech player to watch in 2013 for sure.

Another notable client is Alto Mail by AOL. Currently invite only but I've been playing with it and it is very cool. Ties in your social media accounts too. Works with a variety of email accounts also, including Gmail and iCloud. Give The Verge's write up about the service a look:

@TheRedPin yes, it is just a client not another email address and service. I've used Sparrow in the past, but find myself always looking for something better and more efficient.

I do not trust anyone unless they have a vanity email address (company, their name, or their brand).

If someone emails me - unless personal - with an AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, or other, I will not respond.

I still cannot believe how some agents will list a luxury penthouse for sale and then put their rogers email address. For me it looks funny. If you sell a penthouse for over $1M then you should have money to have your private domain.

@Serge Younan with the cost of personalized email service (under $60/year) it doesn't make sense at all for any professional to use anything else.

It has less to do with "worrying how it looks in front of clients" and more to do with  controlling your email. Email is critical to business these days. What happens if Gmail changes your access? Limits your access on mobile devices?.... You may argue that never happens. Yet they just did. Gmail accounts no longer have access to Exchange and ActiveSync.

If it costs pennies a day why wouldn't you have a more professional and personalized email address?

@Jamie K. Absolutely. Everybody who is really serious about their business has a domain nowadays. If somebody has a domain, it is very strange to use a rogers or gmail address. Almost funny actually. When you're building a personal brand, like every Realtor, this is a must.

@Matthew Slutsky Thanks for sharing the oatmeal graphic

Red flags go off if someone doesn't have a vanity email? Sure they do. If you have enough time to worry about what someones email prefix is - you aren't busy enough.

@Condo Chris - It's not that I actively click on peoples email addresses and pass judgement. I do though like to know from people why they are using a @hotmail or @gmail for business. The usual answer that I have gotten from people is "I don't know how to setup one from my website link"..... I'll usually take the 5 minutes and help them out. That is my personal experience, would like to hear what yours has been.

If my personal email and business email came into the same adress the chance of something important falling through the cracks is greater... I also don't want the email "junk" that arrives to a personal email. My work address gives me an easy out of someones "mass mailer - funny post of the day" emails.

Just my opinion.

Ive been using gmail for years without any spam. This is like some sort of techy racism?? If I were someone researching a Realtor - I'd probably check their site.. I can bet that 90% of the Realtors who feel "cool" because they have myname@mybrand.com have a $500 piece of shit template website that they got when they joined their brokerage.
If a Realtor is creating genuinely good content and has listings that are professionally promoted - Nobody is critiquing their email address cause the proof is right there..

I'm a little embarrassed that I got sucked into this conversation because I would usually categorize people who occupy their brains with this sort of stuff as total nerds. As a Realtor on the other end I don't have the luxury  of judging people based on things like their email or what they are wearing but I can honestly say that a lot of my best clients are ones I might have pre- judged if I was judgmental like that.  Having a closed mind will always cost you business in the log run...

I never trust any emails from a AOL domain -- that's way too old school and obsolete.
Likewise no professional or business should have numbers after their name or business name in their email address or website domain. It shows a lack of professionalism and also shows that you are either too lazy and/or too cheap to get your own email address/domain.

@Condo Chris I'm going to call you out, as you've told people to do so on your website. Yes, I think this topic is a little "nerdy". Though from a business perspective having a professional email address that is associated with the domain provides, in my opinion, a more memorable email address. it's easier for a consumer to remember info@[insert your domain].com. Today people who think about these things are tech savvy in my mind and not nerdy.

I totally agree though that having a closed mind will lose you business as you will overlook opportunities.

I often look to someones email address to find out their web address so this is just another free advertising opportunity. It is so cheap and easy to do these days that I just cannot understand why someone would pass up the option?

@JamieK NO ONE will remember your email address.  Is it info@, mail@, firstname@, fullname@?  No one remembers, just like cell phone numbers. Once its saved, you pull up by theire name, dont you?
As I said above, realtors care. Realtors care how their email domain looks.  Realtors care about their web domain.  CONSUMERS dont care.

@Jamie Sarner great point!

@Serge Younan most people don't remember emails....just like phone numbers. Some people do though, so why not make it memorable. Once it is in your address book it is easier to pull up by name, but making the email memorable is still important. If being memorable wasn't important vanity numbers wouldn't be used. Even if it is only 2% more effective, the costs and time associated with setting it up are justifiable and worth the minimal effort.

Consumers may "say" they don't care, but in reality they do. Having a memorable domain name is important. "Facebook.com" is far more memorable than "WebsiteForTalkingWithFriendsAndPostingUpdates.com".

@Serge Younan I have to respectfully disagree. I actually often remember email addresses and phone numbers from emails. I think that all we are saying is that there is a possible benefit by doing this and a possible negative impression by not doing so. I also should point out the fact that having your own domain gives a user complete control over where they use their email as opposed to using a domain owned by another company where you have to abide by their policies and hope they never go out of business and you lose your email access.

I think the reality is that consumers care about everything whether it be conscious or sub conscious

With that being said I do plan on eventually switching over to andrew@sellwithremax.com at some point. Probably around when I get my next batch of business cards made up.

If a doctor emailed me, and their email address was [at]AOL.com, I would assume that they received their medical degree online or in 1920. There is no way that I could take them seriously.

Same for any professional, including agents.

@Serge Younan and @Condo Chris lets clear some things up...... If a doctor is using an AOL address, it is probably for personal use. Federal mandates would actually prohibit him from communicating with patients via email using an AOL account. AOL accounts are not secure enough given the nature of what is potentially contained in the email.

Do I hate GMail? No way. I use GMail for my personal email AND I use Google Apps for Business which gives me all the awesomeness of GMail with my "own domain" email address + no email scanning to target ads at me. It's also scaleable if my business grows beyond just me.

Does the domain extension matter in the grand scheme of things? No. Are there some reasons that you would want to have ownership over the domain? Obviously yes. Are there reasons why you wouldn't care or use a gmail/other email account? Obviously yes.

Just hear me out here.

+'s of using "own domain" email address:

You legally own your domain. Therefore even if your email system provider goes bust, stops working, or you don't like it, you still own your domain and therefore can continue to use the same email....unless you start a website about terrorism than Homeland Security may seize your .com domain, rendering your email address useless.

More professional. Though obviously that is up for debate.....

No ad targeting. Did you know that Google servers scan all your attachments and emails to target ads to you within GMail and on other websites. Did you know that GMail uses that information to target ads at the people who sent you an email.

Less privacy concerns as you control the entire system and can improve the security of the email system.

-'s of using "own domain" email address:

Cost

Time

Energy

Obviously it's a pain in the butt.... people keep emailing you at your old email address

+'s of GMail/AOL/Outlook.com/Et Cetera:

Free

Rarely have technical issues because of the scale of the service and simplicity of the entire system.

Everyone has your email address because you've used it forever.

-'s of GMail/AOL/Outlook.com/Et Cetera:

You don't own your email address. You could lose permanent access tomorrow without any recourse or being allowed to retrieve emails.... don't believe me? Read your Terms of Service.

No Backup. These free services do not backup your email. Therefore if something goes wrong or you need to recall an email from 6 years ago for taxes.... it may not be there.

Less security and privacy. They actively scan you emails and attachments (except for Outlook.com) to target ads at you.

---------

At the end of the day @Condo Chris you're right "who gives a f--k". An email address is like a phone number.... does it really matter if you have a 416 or 647 phone number, no. The real purpose of it is to allow people to contact you. Does a GMail, Hotmail, or "own domain" email achieve this? yes.

Also no one is going to bring this up as a buyer or seller, because it is silly. I do though bring it up with friends and family who run businesses because of the reasons I've mentioned above.

I am an IT technician and I am also in the market buying a condo.  I contacted and deal with quite a few realtors.  Personally I don't care about what that saleperson email look like.  What I really care is the service and information that person can provide me.  I met some sale persons with very fancy high end business card, website and email address but I wouldn't want to deal with again.  Be yourself and provide a good service, advise, info. which is what you supposed to do.
