120 Java was originally built by Thomas Fitch Rowland, owner of the Continental Iron Works, a prominent Greenpoint shipyard and local employer that built numerous ships including most notably the Monitor iron hulled battleship during the Civil War. Rowland originally built 120 Java as a community center adjacent to the Ascension Church on Kent Street as a gift to the community.
The original masonry and heavy timber structure underwent a full adaptive re-use overseen by Rawlings Architects. Tara Benet Design lead the interior design, re-imagining the building for 21st Century living.
