From Irene Lofts:

Slated for completion in spring 2012, Irene Lofts is an urban housing project involving the quality conversion and expansion of an industrial building dating back to 1938. A stone’s throw from Montreal’s Atwater market, Lachine Canal and Lionel-Groulx metro station, Irene is part of the on-going revitalization of Saint-Henri.

The original two-storey building boasts brick façades with decorative pilasters and two distinctive entrances. For the addition, the approach was to create the impression of a light and floating volume atop the existing, heavier base — a contrasting superstructure that, by virtue of its difference, gives rise to a dialogue between old and new. The addition also features contemporary perforated-metal cladding that serves as a protective layer for the occupants while allowing them to control daylight, ventilation and views through operative panels. Visually, the transparency of the metallic skin (which both veils and reveals the activity within) and the modularity of its openings invest the building with a somewhat performative function, adding a touch of spectacle to the neighbourhood.

A number of communal features have been incorporated into the design, including a back courtyard with a garden, patio and pool; a fully equipped rooftop lounge; and a rooftop deck offering impressive views of downtown and the surrounding neighbourhood.
