Just went shopping at Uniqlo in NYC and was really impressed. I know many Torontonians are looking forward to Uniqlo announcing a TO store.

Personally, I don't like shopping at H&M or Zara but really like Uniqlo and am wondering what others thoughts are on these three competing brands.

ZARA is actually the most expensive out of those in Europe, and quality wise its amazing, along with Tristan.

Uniqlo is pretty great, really clean and pleasant to shop in. But in the end, when I went there, I didn't end up buying anything.

H&M always has this frantic messiness that is hard to handle, but I usually end up buying some basic t-shirt or something.

Uniqlo is best for ultra-basic basics, e.g. $7.90 white v-neck tees, $12.90 HEAT TECH tank tops (those are a layering godsend in the winter). But when it comes to their designer collaborations or their fancier/more tailored pieces, I find the fitting off.

You have to dig harder to get to the good stuff at H&M, but some of their more fanciful items hold up surprisingly well over time. One of my wardrobe staples in college was a $5 black-on-black leopard print miniskirt with leather trim.

I always weep with joy when I look at the coats and blouses at Zara, but I find that given the prices, the quality of the dresses isn't quite there.

for basics uniqlo within these choices...they actually carry a lot of natural fabrics...however...like h&m (at least in the soho store), everything's too cramped and the music is so loud, line ups too long for fitting room and check out... i've actually had to walk out and neglected all my selections with the fitting room clerk. not ideal when you have finite amount of time. when i was in seoul, they had several locations, including dept stores...very organized and time efficient. in and out in 15 mins. :)

zara has some good "it" pieces for each season, well priced (especially when shopping in spain) but still in the category of disposable clothing, but wouldn't buy basics there...poor quality.

i still think for basics, your best bet for quality and price combined are banana, gap, j.crew and club monaco - they last for several seasons (or years).

Pretty much everything I wear is from Uniqlo. They makes solid staple pieces that are never too flashy and will never go out of style. If you time it right, you can get their jeans for $10. Can't beat that!

Uniqlo lovers: the brand is teaming up with hoity-toity minimalist designer Theory for a limited line of sleek down vests ($100) and jackets ($150).

what do you think? I am personally fond of my obnoxiously puffy, beetle-silhouette down jacket, but people who actually care about looking respectable in freezing weather might like this.
