What do you think about Central Vacuums??

Hello,

I am looking to buy a central vacuum system for my house. I have been told to just buy a Dyson, and that central vacuum systems are very 1980s.

Do you have one?? What is the advantage of a stand-alone vacuum?

Thanks to the fine folks at TalkCondo for adding the following information, via Twitter:
"...central vac is not as good as a vac, but much more convenient! ...For two storey home, carrying a dyson up and down is a pain - they are awesome though"

Agree! They are actually a bit of a pain in the ___, especially in a house where you have long hallways and stairs. I'd go Dyson. Or if you're in a condo try one of those robo-vacums. I'm really curious what people who have those think of them :-)

Hey @Nicholas,
Why are they a pain? On a multi-floor house, they seem so much more convienient than having to lug a vacuum all over.
From my understanding, with the exception of some really high end vacuums, the suction power is far greater because you do not have to carry the motor around with you and as such they can have much larger motors.

I guess I've always found them more awkward to work with then an upright vacuum. Also there is always at least 1 or 2 spots where they won't reach LOL

I would say that a central vac is more convenient to use as it's lighter than a vacuum. It's a bit of a pain to get it out of the closet but that's not really an issue. Lugging a heavy Dyson up the stairs and back down again is a whole different story. I also find that it's just as easy to get to hard-to-reach spots with a central vac.
I'd say the only downside is having to unplug the vacuum itself and plug it back in on a different floor.

I think I'd still prefer one of those little machines that runs around the floor all day, but that's a whole other conversation I guess :-)

@Matthew,
Central vacuum systems are definitely the way to go whether you are in an existing home or you are having a home built. There are many benefits to a central vac over portable vacuums. Check out our "7 Reasons Why" page to learn more information (http://builtinvacuum.com/whybiv.html). Also, if you are worried about carry and storing the central vacuum hose, there is a great central vac system that solves that problem. Read more about the Hide-A-Hose as well (http://builtinvacuum.com/hide-a-hose/index.html). If you need a central vacuum installed, one of our many professional central vacuum dealers can help you with that. Find a local dealer in your area today (http://builtinvacuum.com/dealers.html).
If you have any further questions, please feel free to call us @ (800) 997-2278

@Matthew,
We do not have any dealers in Toronto, but we do have a lot in New York. I will find a dealer for you to call if you would like?
