Tipping.. tipping... tipping...

15% to 20% at restaurants
$2 to $5 for a taxi driver
$5 to $10 for a haircut
... what about for my condo concierge???

I am thinking of giving $150 this year to property management for the condo concierge. Is this reasonable? High? Low??

Someone help!!!

I don't use my concierge. No packages; park underground; and, visitors use the intercom system.

Do I need to tip anything??

I imagine that they do a lot of stuff that you may not know about, such as keeping the building secure. If you "use" them a lot, $150-$200 seems reasonable.

If you do not actively use them, maybe $50 to $100?

I am not sure either. Any help?

Wow, $150 seems high given that I don't even spend that much on my own parents! No, just kidding. But seriously, that does seem high. I was thinking about doing a gift instead of a monetary tip. Is this acceptable?

And what is the protocol if you like one concierge but not the other?

We always give a nice gift.... Bottle of wine or a gift certificate! We like to give "experiences", know what we mean?

That depends how much dirt he has on you? How much do you like him? To me it seems a little high.

Hilarious! If he keeps quiet about my mistress, then he gets a lot!

Ok.. I just asked my downtown Toronto condo Property Manager, and she said that the average for my building is $20.

The donations are split between the concierges, 4 full time cleaners, 2 part-time cleaners, superintendent and management.

There are 520 suites in my building, meaning the total take is around $10,400.

So... depending on how many concierge staff is are... the total would be around $800 to $9000 per staff. I guess the number of $150-$200 was very high!

i give $200 annually to both the night and day main guys....these guy provide me always with additional parking when i need it, sign and look after my packages, check up on my place when im away and as a realtor have provided me leads ( nothing outstanding) but they work a thankless job and put in many hours and $4 a week i feel is a good tip for each of them.
I also work late hours and they have helped my wife bring in packages or when she comes home in late hours they accompany her in the garage as she likes this service.

I give my concierge (the day guy) a nice bottle of scotch. My husband and I have become good friends with our day security guy, that we have figured out what his favourite bottle of alcohol is. Therefore, we make sure to buy him a bottle for Christmas. Our security does so much for us, that it is only right to show our appreciation. We also get a nice bottle of something for our Superintendent. Not many realize how much they do to maintain and upkeep our building. Our guy is always there if we are having a plumbing issue, heat/air issue, etc.. We recently gave our superintendent our Christmas gift, and he was very touched.

I have just been told that it is supposed to be roughly 10% of one-months fees.

I think a gift in the range of $50 would be greatly appreciated by most concierges and if you're inclined to spend more because you demand a lot from them throughout the year, you'll be in their "good book".

I have never tipped the concierge in all my time living in a glass chicken coop. Id rather tip the homeless person or the shelter down the street. My strata fees includes concierge and they make an above average wage so why do they need to be tipped?

There are few of them that works in my condo, but I don't tip all of them.
There is one concierge that I see often and is especially helpful, courteous, friendly and knows me by name. I gave him a nice bottle of wine for Christmas which he especially appreciated and was surprised to receive something.
My building has a high ratio of renters and these residents generally don't give a crap about anything and have no gratitude towards the building staff -- I often feel sorry for the concierge staff that have to deal with that.

@John thats kind of funny and a reasonable point. Many people probably don't give their concierge any presents/tips ever. I therefore think anything over $50 is generous and should be appreciated.
